Need help assigning or unassigning an assessment? This guide will walk you through each process step-by-step.

Written by Erin Cooke

Assigning assessments is the first step to gathering some sweet, sweet NGSS data! In this article you'll learn how to assign, unassign, and what students will see on their end for each action.

How to Assign an Assessment

Step 1: Navigate to Your Assessment

  • Go to the Library tab on your InnerOrbit dashboard.

  • Find the assessment you’d like to assign. This applies to district assessments, your created assessments, or assessments shared by others.

Step 2: Select Rosters

Step 3: Customize Assignment Settings

*Optional Step with options to lock/unlock, set due date, and show/don't show student scores or skip to Step 4.

  • Tailor the assignment to fit your needs with these settings:

    • Lock/Unlock: Control when students and which students (individual or small group) can access the assessment.

    • Due Date: Set a due date when assigning an assessment to encourage timely completion.

      • Note: Students can still access and complete the assessment after the due date, and submissions won’t be marked late. However, the submission date and time will be visible in the Assignment Report for teacher reference.

    • Don't Show Scores to Students: Prevents students from viewing their scores and feedback immediately after taking an assessment. Use the green toggle button in the top-right corner.

    • Show Answer and Scores to Students: Students will see their overall grade and which questions they got right or wrong (without the correct answer being revealed). Use the green toggle button in the top-right corner.

Step 4: Share the Assessment Link

  • Once the assessment is assigned to your rosters, share the assignment link with your students via your school’s platform (e.g., Google Classroom, Canvas, Schoology).

  • Alternative Methods: Students can access the assessment through the general login page or via their Clever/Classlink dashboard if synced with your school/district.

Step 5: Verify Your Assignment

  • Return to the Library tab, and check the “Assigned” section to confirm the assessment has been successfully assigned. 🎉

How to Unassign an Assessment

Need to make changes? Follow these steps to unassign an assessment:

Step 1: Locate the Assigned Assessment

  • In the Library tab, find the assigned assessment.

  • Click on the assessment tile.

Step 2: Unassign the Assessment

  • Uncheck the roster(s) previously assigned to the assessment. Mission accomplished!

What Happens When You Unassign an Assessment?

If Students Haven’t Started or Finished:

  • The assessment will disappear from their dashboard. They will no longer be able to view or complete it.

If Students Have Submitted:

  • Students will still see their grade in their Scores tab.

    • If "Show Answers and Scores" is enabled, students will be able to review their answers.

    • If “Don’t Show Scores” is enabled, students will only see a checkmark next to the assessment, indicating submission.

💡 Pro Tip: Unassigning doesn’t erase student progress—it just changes their access.
