How did InnerOrbit set the proficiency ranges for dimensional data? How can I use those ranges to better understand my data?

In this article we'll discuss:

How can I see student proficiency in my reports?

In InnerOrbit reports that contain dimensional data, you'll see proficiency percentages for each dimension:

Those percentages are the % of questions that have been answered correctly for that dimension across ALL your students and assessments this school year.

You'll also see color scales for those proficiency percentages. The default proficiency ranges are:

These ranges are what determines the color scale in your Dimensions Report (and for district admin, your District Report):

What do these ranges mean?

InnerOrbit is currently conducting correlational studies between our these proficiency percentages and state science test results using state test scale score ranges.

InnerOrbit's proficiency ranges are set using the pattern of scale scores in state science test results. For example, on average across multiple states, students need to score between 40%-60% of total points possible on the state test to be "proficient". This is why dimensions above 40% and below 60% are marked "proficient" on InnerOrbit.

This means that you can use InnerOrbit's proficiency ranges to predict state test performance, but hold your predictions loosely as we continue to gather more data to confirm this correlation with district partners.

Do these ranges apply to my state?

Each state's science test scale scores vary, and shift slightly per year. InnerOrbit's proficiency ranges are an average of multiple states, so your state scale scores might be different than that average.

For example, a 5th grader in Oklahoma in 2022 needed at least 100 points (out of 199) to be in the proficient range. This means that proficiency should be set at 50%.
