Create Your First InnerOrbit NGSS Assessment

Step-by-step instructions to launch your first assessment!

Welcome to InnerOrbit! You’re about to bring science learning to life by engaging your students with real-world phenomena and data-rich, multidimensional questions.

Whether you're looking for something quick and ready-to-go or you want to build an assessment from scratch, here are two great ways to get started on InnerOrbit—let’s walk through them both!

How to Build Using a Pre-Made Assessment

What It Is:

InnerOrbit offers ready-to-go assessments designed with our recommended question formulas. These are great for quickly assessing where students are in their learning journey.


Types of Pre-Made Assessments:

  1. Pre-Instruction Diagnostics – Gauge prior knowledge

  2. Mid-Instruction Formatives – Check progress and adjust instruction

  3. Post-Instruction Summatives – Measure mastery

How To:

  1. Go to the “Build” Tab

    • Navigate to the “Build” tab in your InnerOrbit dashboard.

  2. Search by Standard or Browse Tiles

    • Search Bar: Type a standard (e.g., MS-LS1-1) or keyword (e.g., cells).

    • Browse Tiles: Select a grade band to explore standards visually.

  3. Locate the “Assign Pre-Made Assessments” Section

  4. Select a Pre-Made Assessment that suits your needs

  5. Add Questions

    • To Add All Questions:

      • Click the green “Assign All Questions” button.

    • To Add Specific Questions:

      • Scroll down to the question you want to include on your assessment and select the “Add to Quiz” button.

      • You can also modify any question by selecting “Modify Question.”

  6. Review Your Assessment

    • After you add questions, click “View Your Assessment” on the upper right corner of your screen.

  7. Name and Save Your Assessment

  8. Access Your Assessment in the Library Tab

    • Decide how to use it in your classroom:

      • Assign to students

      • Print for in-class use (great for partner or table work)

      • Project for whole-class discussion

🛠️ How to Build Your Own Assessment

What It Is:

Create an assessment tailored to your goals—whether it’s a warm-up, exit ticket, or full-length summative.

How To:

  1. Go to the “Build” Tab

    • Navigate to the “Build” tab in your InnerOrbit dashboard.

  2. Search by Standard or Browse Tiles

    • Search Bar: Type a standard (e.g., MS-LS1-1) or keyword (e.g., cells).

    • Browse Tiles: Select a grade band to explore standards visually.

  3. Locate the “Build From Phenomena and Questions” Section

  4. Select a Phenomenon

    • Choose a phenomenon aligned to your instructional goals.

  5. Add Questions

    • Scroll through the questions (organized from lowest to highest rigor).

    • Click “Add to Quiz” for the questions you'd like to include.

    • 💡 Pro Tip: You can also modify any question by clicking “Modify Question.”

  6. Review Your Assessment

    • After you add questions, click “View Your Assessment” on the upper right corner of your screen.

  7. Name and Save Your Assessment

  8. Access Your Assessment in the Library Tab

    • Decide how to use it in your classroom:

      • Assign to students

      • Print for in-class use (great for partner or table work)

      • Project for whole-class discussion
