How to View Submitted Student Responses

Step 1: Open the "Grading" tab.

Step 2: Find Your Assessment

Scroll to find your assignment, then click “View Questions to Grade” followed by “Grade Now.

💡 Note: If no student answer sheets have been submitted yet, the assessment will not appear in the list.

Step 3: Understand the Grading Page Layout

Once inside the grading view, here’s what you’ll see:

  • Left Panel:

    • List of student names who have submitted their assessment

    • A list of students who have submitted their assessments

    • A dropdown to sort by first name, last name, average score, or scores for specific dimensions.

  • Right Panel:

    • The question prompt

    • The student’s written response

    • The 3D rubric is divided into three dimensions: DCI, SEP, and CCC

How to Score Student Responses

Step 1: Select a Student

You will find each student's scoring rubric below their free response submission.

Step 2: Review Student Response and Rubric

For each NGSS dimension, students can receive 0 to 4 points. After reading the student's response, refer to the rubric to view:

  • Performance Descriptors: Each NGSS dimension (DCI, SEP, and CCC) includes performance descriptors for every score point from 0 to 4.

  • (Coming Fall 2025) Scoring Guidance Sample Language: Hover over any performance descriptor to see a pop-up with example language that shows how student proficiency might appear.

ℹ️ Scoring guidance sample language is meant to represent how the dimensional knowledge or skill could appear in a proficient response. It does NOT represent all possible ways that a student could demonstrate proficiency, nor does it necessarily represent the only correct answer.

Step 3: Score Student Response

Click a performance descriptor to assign a score (0–4) for that dimension.

⌨️ Keyboard Shortcut:
You can also use number keys (0–4) to quickly score the student’s response across all dimensions with the same point value.

Step 5: Provide Written Feedback (Optional)

Click the comment bubble to add written feedback directly to the student’s response.

To move to the next student’s response, click “Next Answer” at the bottom of the page or select the next student’s name from the blue panel on the left.

Helpful Grading Features

Here are some tips on each feature to help your grading easier:

Highlighting Feature (Free Response Question)
